You were running at least the software that connects you to the internet.
Communicator itself does not do that and won't browse the web unless those
lower level services are running.

It's quite possible in theory, but it could be just bugs or coincidence.

Many older versions of Communicator (and IE) have known security holes --
check with your vendor to make sure you've got the latest version. But also
the lower level internet services can be vulnerable, especially with
broadband connections and unpatched versions of windows. Update your OS with
the latest patches, and if you have a broadband "always on" connection
consider getting a personal firewall product in addition to your virus checker.
