Building an XPCOM component

I discovered XPCOM today and decided to give it a try. I have a 
background with DCOM, so most of it seemed familiar. The problem is in 
fact quite ridiculous. I don't know exactly where to start. I wrote a 
IDL file, compiled it, but now I'm stuck. I've been trying to find some 
documentation but the only things I could find were fragments. Could 
anyone point me to the API's documentation and something like 
'step-by-step Hello World XPCOM component' or something like that?

I saw a few code examples but there are dozens of lines that make 
absolutly no sense, I'd like to understand the entire process.
