Custom sessions for autocomplete textbox

The documentation on the subject of custom datasources for autocomplete 
sessions is a bit vague, and I am actually not really sure about weather 
it is actually possible or not. Is the "addSession" simply there for 
future expansion or can it be used *today*?

Does anybody know of a working example using a custom datasource (i.e. 
not history, ldap, adress book etc)? Could it work for remote XUL or is 
it chrome only?

Any info would be greatly appreciated...
