You can use nsIPromptService for this purpose Use the contractid @mozilla.org/embedcomp/prompt-service;1
I get the impression that a 'quit' button in a XUL window can exit mozilla without issue, but javascript may not have the same access to the event handler that is called when one selects Quit (or Exit) from the file menu.
