HI BDS, I have implemented  nsIObserver inteface to notify when xpcom-startup. My component works well with Mozilla 1.7.3. I suspected the component registration with firefox. Just because your component is registered doesn't mean that Firefox/XPCOM is going to create it. You have to arrange for somebody to create your component in order to do something.
