Preferences & xpinstall

I'm not really sure which one of these 2 groups is the best one to ask
this quesiton, so I'm going to ask it in both...

If I'm using XPI to install a package but I need to set some default
preferences... Is there anyway for me to do that in the package or do I
need to do some fancy handling in my xul/js files?
