This happens because the web site does not have the correct MIME type
associated with .xpi files

You have three choices:
 - bug the site admin to update their site.
 - save the .xpi locally then drag it into a browser window
 - copy the URL and enter the following in the location bar:

javascript:InstallTrigger.startSoftwareUpdate("URLgoeshere")
