It acts as the "middle man" between your browser, and your streaming MP3 player for mpeg URL and playlist files (.m3u and .pls). You may have discovered that getting your MP3 player to load mpeg URL and playlist files directly from your browser is a hassle, and often does not work (a few players do, but the majority don't). after setting SR as your helper application for thse file types, you can configure SR to change the format of the file (.m3u to .pls or vice versa), and tell it what mac file type and creator to give the file, as well as what mp3 player to use.
