Arrggh, here we go again. It's a bit hard to come up with a more idiotic topic
for discussion than this. The same old story, nobody likes genre-mania and nobody
really cares whether track x represents genre y or z... or so they say. But still,
I keep getting into these arguments... maybe I should just stick with the good
old "yup, it's music alright". ;) To avoid trouble, I try to limit myself to three
genres when talking about electronic music: idm, dnb and miscellanous. As for
Amon Tobin, yup, definitely 'dnb'. But in my huge categoric system, that's far
from pidgeonholing. But you just couldn't resist the tempation, could you. ;)
And just to make sure, I admit that I don't know shit about genres, and
wouldn't recognize them even if they landed on my belly. And IMHO this is
a very healthy condition for musicians. If you really know, what dnb (or x)
sounds like, then you either do a dnb track, or a non-dnb track. Whatever
you do, the concept of 'dnb' in your mind, is always present and affects
you. And that's sad. Much better to be an idiot. :)
