I think you rather mean AIFF. IFF is merely a format structuring
framework.

The point is that they deliberatly and unnecessarily left IFF
conformance, which means that existing IFF-parsing code could not be
used, and some useful IFF mechanisms (like application-specific meta-
or side-data that other applications would leave untouched) were lost.
