Is it possible to encode/decode multi-track wave files using Lame? If
not how hard would it be.
The surround sound folks are a bit stymied at the moment by cost of
equipment and the extra cost of DVD-A or SACD to support it. That is
generating a resounding yawn among consumers. If, however, this could
be supported via MP3 a big barrier could be overcome. We here know that
MP3 doesn't need to mean loss of quality and a multi-channel MP3 scheme
could get modern surround technology (4 channel UHJ ambisonic being the
best candidate) off the ground.
To be optimal it would be best if the multi-channel MP3 decoder
supported a surround decoding DLL through which the channels could be
passed after MP3 decoding to handle the plethora of surround decoding
possibilities. Using Ambisonics they all can derived from the same UHJ
surround encoding. Then other developers could easily provide the
surround decoding technology without impacting the main Lame
development.
It would be way cool if Lame could bring a stalled technology to life
and offer an actual improvement to the listening experience.
