Hi,

I use Lame (within the RazorLame windows front-end) since a year or two, and I'm being converting my CD's
for personnal use (PC, car), but that's not the reason of
this mail ! The reason is that I note that a piece of music,
extracted from a CD, say twice, with the exact same size
for the two resulting WAV files, give two MP3 files with
different sizes (with a difference between one and three Ko). Can you explain that ? The extraction is made with
the same Cd reader, of course; I say of course but I also
note that the same piece of music extracted with two
different CD readers giving also exactly the same size,
give systematically two MP3 outputs of different sizes.
With one piece of music, the MP3 with the first reader is
greater than the MP3 with the second reader, but with
an other piece of music, the second is the greatest !
Finally, the software used to make the extraction has also
some influence : I normally use the GoldWave software
to do the extractions, but for test, I do it sometimes with
the Plextools utilities which always give a WAV output
greater than with the Goldwave, and, incomprenhensible
but true, sometimes greater than the real size of the
piece of music !
For your best information, I always work in VBR with the
best quality, with an Hitachi GD-5000 DVD reader and an
Plextor 16/10/40 CD burner for my extractions.
With the Goldwave program and with the Razorlame I use
the Byte swap option, which give smaller MP3 files and
it is no difference in quality with all the situations, the
output is the same quality than the original CD (General
bitrate at 256, VBR at 320 kbit/s) using the 27 September
2000 Lame executable.
Thanks,
