It should work. At least I committed a fix for 3.90 which is supposed to work with libvorbis-1.0.r2. I'm not sure what one has exactly to do to get it working, but I think you have to get some internal vorbis headers which don't get installed. At least this is what I understand by reading the information in the FreeBSD Ports Collection. Maybe you want to look at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/audio/lame-devel/ yourself.
