It could well be a playback issue rather than an encoder issue.  I
saw the same problem, but I believe it's due to the fact that most
playback programs attempt to set the sound device to mono, and don't
check the return value for the error that happens when the hardware
doesn't support mono playback.  I've submitted bugs for this issue on
a couple of players[1][2], after being advised by Alan Cox that it's
not a driver bug.
