Sorry, you never mentioned bitrate and you said "I'm not very good with this", so I 
was addressing things that I thought you may not have taken into account..

Okay, as for LAME, there are a bewildering number of options, and I suspect that 
unless you started your tests sometime last fall you haven't gotten through all the 
possible incarnations yet.  :)

Perhaps you might get some good tips out of the r3mix site.  http://www.r3mix.net 

After reading the "Quality" page, you may want to try out the --r3mix preset and see 
if it works for you. 
They claim that it is the best comprimise between quality and size and they give all 
the reasons and testing (extensive, I think) done to come to this conclusion.

Not to mention, it's a hell of a lot easier than typing:   "--nspsytune --vbr-mtrh -V1 
-mj -h -b96 --lowpass 19.5 --athtype 3 --ns-sfb21 2 -Z --scale 0.98 -X0"   :)
