Yes, you bring up another good point. Can't create bandwidth and dynamic range that does not exist in the first place. So the degree of compression and whether to use lossy or lossless depends on several factors. Also convience would have to come into play. No fun wanting to load up my MP3 player and having to sit and convert stuff to do it.
Perhaps a good plan is to rip a CD to the most convienent format, at a bitrate that is as close to transparent as practical, given one's equipment and hearing (perhaps ABX or some other blind listening test could tell you this) and consider the CD itself the "archive". It works for me.
