I see no way of doing this (3.92) so I would suggest a new feature for LAME.
Add a command line option to read the ID3 information from an input mp3 file and use this information when outputting to a new mp3 file. Why would I want this? My mp3 archive is encoded at a very high bitrate, around 220 VBR. When I create mp3 CDs for my portable player I re-encode the existing mp3 files down to a 112 ABR bitrate to pack as much as possible onto a single CD, and create mixed CDs. It is extreeeemely inconvenient to have to take the CDs from my 300 disc changer and reextract with EAC. I understand that encoding from an mp3 file is not as good as from the wav file directly. I would argue that it is reasonable to re-encode existing archival quality mp3 files down to low bitrate files for when you hit the road. Thanks for listening.
