32kbps is plenty, especially if your source material is of good quality. I encode most of my audiobooks at 32kbps and 44khz. Some of the really large ones I have gone as low as 24kbps (22khz) so I could get more of it on a hardware MP3 player, and they are still tolerable even at that bitrate. Some people might not like the "ringing" artifacts you tend to get at this level though.
