It appears, that for non VBR modes, that lame does handle 24-bit /48khz wav files. Actually I do not know this for sure, but the resultant .mp3 file sizes for the 24-bit/48 wavs is larger than from the equivalent audio rendered as 16-bit/48.
Thanks for any info. on the Fraunhofers. I realize that "support" may just mean truncation rather than dithering, etc., but at least I won't need multiple copies of wav files. Still curious about the larger mp3 file sizes from the 24-bit wavs though non VBR.

I don't think Lame can handle 24 bit wave files. You probablyhave to convert
the 24 file wave file to a 16 wave file first. You might have to start use
Fraunhofers MP3 Encoder in stead. If I where you I should check out if the
Fraunhofer mp3 encoder can convert to 24 bit mpeg stream. I'll try to check
that in my source that I got from Fraunhofer.
