Perhaps try converting the AIFF files to wav using sox?

Many thanks as that did solve my problem and makes my life much easier. I convert the AIFF to WAV using sox and then run lame to create all the MP3 files.
I may be the only individual creating AIFF files from scratch. This for a project that I am working on to teach morse code.
Thanks again for all the help. Some one might note that the AIFF to MP3 conversion using lame direct does seem to have a small bug. My guess would be the offset to get the starting bite of sound data in the AIFF file.
