Actually, m4a files created by iTunes can either be lossy AAC or Apple Lossless format internally.
The original poster is correct. The original poster is using a Mac so dbpoweramp is irrelevant
in this context. Lame is unfortunately completely unoptimized on the G5 (as of the last time
I checked) so his complaint about performance is valid as well.
