g77 is just the name of the GNU Fortran 77 compiler.  It should be fine.

No, g77 is not a problem.  Probably you installed the libraries into the 
wrong location or something of that sort; read the installation manual 
carefully.  It's impossible for me to give more advice from the 
information you've given.
