You don't need PML to compute the slab band structure, at least not for the band structure of the guided modes. The guided modes are exponentially localized to the slab, so you can just use a supercell in the z direction with periodic boundary conditions, and the boundaries are exponentially negligible as the supercell size increases. (And in the xy directions it is really periodic, of course.)
