Hello users,

I am interested in computing the modal area of a (Photonic Crystal
Waveguide) PhCWG structure and thus it is very important that the
calculations include the proper input field files. I have run in 3D and
output all field components.

Like Fred, I have encountered a problem with the field phase:
http://ab-initio.mit.edu/pipermail/mpb-discuss/2007-June/000287.html

The commands,

real
h5topng -Zc dkbluered -C epsilon.h5:data-new -d x.r-new   ex.band14.h5
imaginary
h5topng -Zc dkbluered -C epsilon.h5:data-new -d x.i-new   ex.band14.h5

give basically the same results --> modes that do not look like they
propagate. (The Hz looks nice, but I'm interested in the electric
field). Since all of the field is not in either real nor imaginary, to
create the full Ex field do I need to combine the outputs of each part
in a special way e.g. Ex=a + ib --> |Ex| = a^2-b^2
before performing the computation

Aeff = int ( int (    |Ex|^2 dy dz ))^2  /     int ( int (    |Ex|^4 dy
dz )) in octave/matlab?

FIELDS
Also, just to confirm the fields are defined as follows:

|E|^2 = |Ex|^2 + |Ey|^2 + |Ez|^2, where

|Dpwr|^2 = eps*|E|^2

|Hpwr|^2 = |H|^2 = |Hx|^2 + |Hy|^2 + |Hz|^2

Thank you,
Chad
