I'm not sure which "Photonic Crystals" paper you are referring to, but
the Guided Modes paper can be downloaded from my home page and also
from ab-initio.mit.edu (see the "papers" link).
However, for basic introductory material of this sort I would
recommend using our new textbook instead: "Photonic Crystals: Molding
the Flow of Light, 2nd edition" which can be downloaded at no cost
from our web site:
ab-initio.mit.edu/book
Chapter 8 of the book covers photonic-crystal slabs, and is much more
comprehensive than my 1999 paper.
