I recently made the build on Mavericks work again. Older OSX versions are currently difficult to build on due to the poor C++11 support of the default compilers.
It is possible to build mpd with a compiler with a more capable standard library, but you'll have to build all dependencies with that compiler too, which complicates things. The homebrew people may come up with a way to simplify this in the future. If you are interested, you can keep an eye on this PR [1] on GitHub.
