I think mpd behaves correctly in this instance.

I have tags in a single file like:
 PERFORMER = Kenny Loggins
 PERFORMER = Jim Messina

I would want all of those indexed (there may be more than two).
This is especially important with jazz where on a single album there will be
some songs where all performers are playing, or some random mix of performers.

This way you will have correct metadata for each track and know who is playing
on which one.
