Fantastic work Bill - it offers a really substantial speed up and is hence
something we should add to MPIR as soon as you feel it is ready.

almost all are search/replace operations - is it always obvious where
TMP_MARK should be inserted?
I might be able to have a go at this if it is little more than a
search/replace operation (does your list of changes cover the tests?).
