Chrysippus said, when asked why he didn't enter into
politics, that bad politics would displease the gods
and good politics would displease the citizens. If I
understand Steve correctly--that good local leaders
should strive to make unpopular decisions--then his
displeasure should stand as a sign that leadership is
on the right track.
I should admit that I wear partisan stripes (as a DFL
staffer in St. Paul), but I should also admit that
talented leadership comes in all flavors, so long as
their skills of compromise and cooperation are
well-honed.
