We were treated to a preview of next years city elections when Barb
Lickness, long reported to be a candidate for Minneapolis City Council made
a post to the Minneapolis issues list. Some stuff you just cant make up,
the real thing is just so much better than fiction. Here goes:

[Lickness] Carsten called me today. Said he was working on a version of the
DFL letter too. I agree my opening statement was weak. I guess that must
epitomize my confidence when it comes to the DFL.

[TB Comment] Okay, so you are a party hack, do you really expect that every
other party hack is going to support you? In a contested endorsement?

[Lickness] Anyway, he will forward his version to me tomorrow. Will forward
that to you and Fred when I get it.

I know you are leary of Fred. So am I. But would rather have him on my side
than agin' me. Dean has dissed him and I am going to capitalize on that.
But I also know not to bring him in too closely. He will be an asset on the
DFL strategy stuff. He has already produced a map of all the "green" party
people in the ward. I can target them all directly with a letter and
hopefully defuse some of the people that may
consider supporting Dean Zimmerman.

[TB Comment/Translation] I do not trust Fred, no way, no how. So the stuff
that Im sending to the two of you isnt that important.

But, Im going to try to turn him against the others. Hes a hack so maybe
he can help me with the other hacks. I want him to help me stop the support
of anyone who might even consider using an independent thought process. We
need to march lock step together.

[Lickness] And as far as the DFL fundraiser goes, let me know if you need
Robin and I to make chocolates or if you would prefer I didn't get involved
in that. I need to know in advance so I can plan the time.

[TB hint] After the above, they might not want you involved. They might
not even want to go near you. Some people dont like it when you say you
dont trust them or people that are their friends, they become protective.
Many people would consider it bad form to blast that all over the internet.
It can harm a candidacy, especially one that is either just getting started
or one that still has time for someone else to get into the race.

[Lickness] I also forgot that I will probably be getting some money from the
fundraiser on Wednesday so should be alright on the financial front. But I
don't want to spend too much on this DFL party cuz I won't make much from
the fundraising. These people give $5 and $10 bucks and stuff.

[TB comment] Youre right, go for the big money. Dont waste your time on
people that are just plain cheap. If they wont write a check for at least
50 or a hundred bucks forget about them. Money is everything.

[Lickness concludes] I really want to support you in this role, I just don't
know how so I need you to tell me. O.K.?

Later gater.

[TB concludes] A couple of weeks ago there was a letter going around part
of the city that looked like it could have been written by Pat Buchanan.
Now, Pat isnt someone who had strong support in Minneapolis, he got 2300
votes in all of Hennepin County and 0.91% of the vote statewide. But this
letter was (I think) intended to persuade voters to vote for the letter
writer. This week we get, well Ive said enough about it. I admire you for
being open, but sometimes one should think about what the reader will think
before you distribute this stuff.
