Thank you to all the list members who have expressed sympathy and concern about the burglary that happened at my house Thanksgiving morning. I am all right, just minor bruises. The intruder came in through my back door, which I had failed to latch securely after letting my small, non-violent dog out. I heard a noise in the living room and saw a man leaving through the kitchen. I chased him and he hit me twice and knocked me down. He took my wallet, which had no cash in it. The police were efficient and polite, however they haven't arrested anybody yet. The holidays are a peak time for burglaries, people need to be cautious and follow good safety habits, as always. The Bancroft neighborhood has been a safe, friendly attractive home for me and my family for 17 years. Crime rates have dropped significantly since I moved here, with the exception of the 38th and Chicago intersection. The neighborhood looks great, too - I think we've really benefited from the NRP, especially the financial support for home maintenance and community organizing. We have a high percentage of block clubs and have received good service from CCP/Safe. I guess I feel like I still have a lot to be thankful for - I believe the city is working here. That's not to say that things are perfect. And I wish somebody would pick up on Russ Peterson's complaints. There is too much stuff going on at 38th and 23rd Avenue, the neighborhood needs attention. The arson attack on Movies To Go was a real tragedy; we are really fortunate that the owners decided to stay and reopen their excellent, friendly video store after it was practically destroyed. -- Holle Brian Bancroft (612) 822-6593
