For those that don't read the sports page, following is an excerpt from =
today's paper. Maybe those that support public funding will take notice =
when a sportswriter changes positions and decides its a bad idea.

Written by Patrick Reusse, Star Tribune, 12/12/00:

"Monday's activities at the winter meetings did leave a Minneapolis =
sportswriter in a circumstance where it's time to issue several =
apologies....=20
"The apologies here are directed to the politicians who led the fight =
against any form of public funding for a Twins ballpark during the 1997 =
special sessions at the Legislature. I wrote a succession of columns in =
support of such a ballpark. And I dismissed the following argument as a =
reason to oppose taxpayer help for a ballpark: Baseball's finances were =
so out of whack that the major league game was obsolete in Minnesota, =
with or without a new ballpark.

"Monday, [Alex] Rodriguez signed his contract [with Texas] for $252 =
million -- roughly three times the sale price (also finalized Monday) =
for the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes -- and it became official: CONTRACTS THAT =
ZOOM BEYOND ALL REASONABLE GUIDELINES FOR SANITY ARE THE VERY BEST =
REASON FOR NOT GETTING PUBLIC MONEY INVOLVED IN BUILDING A BALLPARK. =
[emphasis mine]

"So, all you anti-ballpark folks over at the Legislature, you get my =
sincerest possible apology."
