This below message about the Hard TImes Cafe hearing is really not accuratet.
The City Council is not holding any hearing on the Hard Times Cafe; it already
took final action to revoke its licenses in June, 2000. The legality of the
City's action has been challenged in court. The matter is now before the
Minnesota Court of Appeals, and there will in fact be a hearing (formally
called an "oral argument") on January 31, 2001 at 10 am at the Minnesota
Judicial Cente in St. Paul. A panel of three judges will then decide whether
to uphold or reverse the city's action.
Of course, the City Council is always free to change its mind and decide on its
own to approve licenses for the Hard Times Cafe. To this end, contacting city
council members cannot hurt (especially if people understand what is going
on). Although all of the council members could propose action the matter, in
reality Joan Campbell holds the key. The Hard Times Cafe is in her ward, she
took the initiative in trying to close is down, and other council members will
follow her wishes.
FYI, the heroic council members who opposed closing down the Hard Times were
Lisa Goodman, Barrett Lane, Lisa McDonald, Jim Niland, and Paul Ostrow.
