As everyone may know, redistricting of election districts is to occur every
10 years following the U.S. Census. This includes city ward and precinct
lines and Minneapolis park and Recreation district lines. Minnesota Statutes
204B.135 and 204B.14 and the Minneapolis City Charter provide the method and
timeframes to conduct the redistricting process in the City. The City's
website has more detailed information on the process and the City Charter
can be found at
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/citywork/clerk/elections/redistrict.html.
The Minnesota Statutes can be found at http://www.leg.state.mn.us/. There is
currently a debate about whether the City can, must, should redistrict this
year or next year. If the redistricting does not occur until next year, that
means the new boundaries would not be in effect for city elections until
2005. The Charter Commission is weighing in on this matter and a special
meeting of the Charter Commission is set for next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in
Room 220 City Hall. The City Attorney's office will hopefully be presenting
the Charter Commission with options to consider.
