I attended most of the Senate Transportation Committee hearing last Thursday
regarding the Crosstown shutdown and detour. Although the Department of
Transportation apparently believes that Southwest traffic into the city will
follow the Highway 100 and 394/494 detours, I believe drivers will find their
own way downtown.
My biggest concern is that drivers heading into Minneapolis will exit at Penn
and then drive north on Penn to Diamond Lake Road or 50th Street. Then east
on those streets to Nicollet, then north on Nicollet to 46th Street. These
routes pass four schools: Armitage, Annunciation, Burroughs and
Washburn/Ramsey. If this occurs, I believe we in Southwest Minneapolis are
looking at much faster street traffic speeds with probably a significant
increase in air pollution. (Will semis be allowed on these Minneapolis
streets or will they hopefully be forced to take the official detour routes?)
Since the Crosstown may be closed for up to FOUR YEARS, it will be incumbent
upon city council members and city legislators to devise innovative traffic
calming and traffic regulation to prevent Southwest Minneapolis from becoming
a speedway or parking lot. Any suggestions for them?
