I don't understand the opposition to making wine available in grocery
stores, unless you happen to own a liquor store or restaurant with a liquor
license... in which case you don't want any added competition and reduced
revenues. Making beer/wine available in grocery stores is simply giving
consumers the added convenience of not having to make an additional trip to
a liquor store, when the product they want could easily be available in the
grocery. Such opposition presumes people of legal age are not responsible
for their own actions, and uses restrictive law to arbitrarily limit their
choice as responsible adults.
I don't know of any objective, controlled studies relating to beer/wine
availability in grocery stores and increases in drunk driving... there
probably aren't any, given the incentives to do such a study. However, it
seems that to withhold endorsement of beer/wine sales in grocery stores
because the daughter of a friend was killed by a drunken driver is akin to
endorsing restricted sales/consumption of eggs, cheese and red meat because
they contribute to arteriosclerosis; or restricting the number of
automobiles allowed per household because too many cars on the road
contribute to highway deaths, consume too much oil, etc.
It would be very convenient if, after purchasing chicken, salad, yams and
vegetables for a family meal, I could add a bottle of 'white zin' to the
shopping cart and head straight home-- avoiding added driving and crowded
parking lots. The increased availability (in grocery stores) would likely
result in lower consumer cost as well, due to the added competition. Just
ask yourself who wins and who looses in this decision..., or as someone once
said... 'just follow the money! I support beer and wine sales in grocery
stores, but then I'm just a consumer and a small campaign contributor on
occasion.
