Hello:

If you are looking for research on the relationship
between privatization and alcohol use, visit:

http://www.epi.umn.edu/alcohol/about/compproj.html

or

http://www.apolnet.org/

I have seen two types of studies that attempt to find
a correlation between privatization and increased
consumption of alcohol. One type says there's no
correlation, while the other says there's a positive
relationship (i.e. more stores lead to more drinking).
Critics of the first type of study say that the old
statistical model is inadequate. I'm inclined to
agree, given what I've read.

As for the relationship between consumption and public
health/safety, current research doesn't favor the
wine-with-dinner crowd. The bill may benefit some
consumers (and clearly metro grocers), but the social
costs are simply too steep for my liking.
