Blue Laws were highly enforced in Ohio during my 21 years there. They wre
created, I think, during a push from the WCTU (Womens Christian Temprance). The
dictate was based in Sunday being a day good Christians devote to their God, so
business in anything other than milk, baby food, and prescription drugs could not
be sold anywhere in the state on Sunday. It was followed, in Ohio, by the rise
of "dairy stores" which carried baby food, etc., but also ice cream, malteds.
Ohio also had state liquor stores, run by the state and accountable to the
state. Hard liquor was sold there, exclusively. People could buy liquor by the
drink in bars and restaurants, but they could only buy for party and home use in
the state store with limited hours--8 or 9 pm, closed Sundays. State closed
them on holidays and election days if I remember right. They also developed "pony
kegs"--long quonset hut stores, you drove in, gave your order, they packed it in
your trunk, you paid and drove out the other end. You could by beer in kegs or
pony kegs (half keys), cheap wines, and all the snacks on earth at that time.
Pony kegs could stay open till midnight? or so, also closed on Sundays.
I don't have any quarrel with that notion, even if it was a Christian idea
originally.
