This is a recent crime alert that came from the 5th precinct. I'm reposting
it here because almost all of it applies city-wide:

The Crime Prevention Unit was recently alerted by the City Sidewalk
Inspector that a number of elderly people have been injured on our city
sidewalks.

Homeowners, as well as rental property owners, are responsible for clearing
snow and ice from sidewalks. Spreading sand or using ice-melting material
can also be helpful.

Southwest residents can pick up free sand at 6036 Harriet Ave. S. (on west
60th St. between Lyndale and Harriet)

The Minneapolis City Ordinance #445 reads "Snow and ice removal requires
property owners to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice. Residential
properties have 24 hours after the snow stops falling and commercial
properties have 4 daytime hours to clear their sidewalks."

Failure to clear sidewalks could result in a $55 citation and city crew
ordered to remove the snow and ice at an additional charge.

My comment: as someone who walks neighborhood streets for exercise, I can
testify that if the cops wrote all the tickets they could, we could close
the next decade's budget shortfalls. But I am a lawbreaker too, so this is a
good reminder to try harder.
