>2. Education >What has Sharon done about these issues? Made them worse. >Yes, as mayor she isn't DIRECTLY in charge of the education system. But, >the position can be used as a pulpit to direct and push agenda items along. >Education is the number one item a city has going for it. It is what >attracts families to an area, and keeps them here. I don't here of many >people that have lived in Minneapolis for a while, have kids, and stay long >enough to send their kids to school here. It is the bell weather of the >livability factor number one. Anyone who knows me, knows what large bones I have to pick with the current city administration. But the part about education is off base. Here is why. When my first daughter was born, she was not allowed to go to the highly rated Fulton Elementry School. The school was in sight from our back yard! I asked why? I was told "because she's white..deseg guidelines y'know". Huh! I guessed Brown V. The Board of Education Topeka Kansas hadn't reached this cow town. Well that silly A-- consent decree is history now. It was lifted. It would not have been lifted unless Sharon Sayles Belton stepped up to the plate and started hacking. She took plenty of bullets from a whole lot of her freinds on that one. An act who's time had come? Yes. But still a very brave act. In the better neighborhoods, the schools are starting to become something we recognize again. Stabalization is occuring. Maybe with time, the rest of the district will follow. Yes the mayor and the council are always taking an undue influence in the schools. One day I wish the school board members would start giving their opinions on how long certain members of the council should serve. Maybe make it part of their campaign lit. ;-) Craig Miller Former Fultonite [EMAIL PROTECTED] > >_______________________________________________ >Minneapolis Issues Forum - Minnesota E-Democracy >Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: >http://e-democracy.org/mpls _______________________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - Minnesota E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
