ten most powerful African American women in America.  The article appears in
the March issue of the magazine.

Mayor Sayles Belton named one of most 10 most powerful influential Black
women

February 20, 2001 (Minneapolis, MN)-Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton
was named as one of  "The 10 Most Powerful Black Women" in the March 2001
issue of Ebony magazine.   
        The article introduces the list as women who "have leapfrogged over
limited minds, limited resources and other people's low aim for their lives
to not only lift themselves but to lift others as well." 
        The article cited Mayor Sayles Belton's lifelong commitment to
public service and her accomplishments as the first African American and
first woman Mayor of Minneapolis.
"This list recognizes many esteemed women who have made enormous
contributions to our community and to this country," said Mayor Sayles
Belton. "I am honored to be mentioned among them and to be recognized by
Ebony Magazine."
Those honored include: Oprah Winfrey, Talk Show Host and CEO of Harpo
Entertainment Group; Ann M. Fudge, Group Vice President, Kraft Foods;
Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush;
Marian Wright Edelman, Founder and President, Children's Defense Fund; Cathy
