Mr. Stafford, indicated in a previous post that I am a former republican and intimated that I supported either George Bush or Pat Buchanan in the last election. I would like to respond to that here: When Dean Kallenbach, the 6th ward candidate for who Rick Stafford is the campaign chair, began telling people I was a republican early in this campaign, my campaign chair forwarded a response to Mr. Kallenbach stating the facts regarding his accusations. I am not now nor have I ever been a registered republican. I have never caucused as a republican at any time. If my name appears on some list somewhere it is certainly not there with my knowledge or permission. I am a DFL delegate now and have been a DFL delegate previously. In the last presidential election I supported Al Gore and proudly displayed his sign on my lawn. Furthermore, the alleged conversation that Lisa McDonald and I had that was supposedly overheard is a falsehood. The conversation never occured. When I ran for City Council in 1993, I ran as an independent. There was no independence party then. I did not realize then that I could list as a democrat without endorsement. I did not seek out nor did I receive republican endorsement of any kind. The only endorsement I applied for and received was the NOW endorsement. (National Organization of Women) I believe that I was the age old victim of being accused of being a republican because most republicans who run for office in this city seem to gravitate to the independent tag. However, I do admit to and am proud of having friends who are republicans. They are fine upstanding citizens just like democrats and other party people. While we may differ largely on political philosophy, that has never been the defining factor in my choice of friends and associates. I have worked side by side with republicans in my neighborhood volunteer activities and they have made enormous contributions to Whittier and it's well being. I believe that once elected to office, a good city council member will listen to all sides of an issue before rendering a decision regardless of the party status of the people involved. I know that the Kallenbach campaign is using this republican association (at least now they are adding the word former in there) in their attempt to discredit my viability as a City Council Candidate. My campaign supporters and myself have heard this "rumor" from several sources and been told that it is coming directly from the Kallenbach campaign. While I can't stop it, I would hope eventually Mr. Kallenbach and his campaign workers would stop this mean spirited McCarthy quest and spend more time talking about Mr. Kallenbach and the experience he has that makes him a good candidate for this office. On a brighter note....it's starting to feel like Spring out there. Barb Lickness Whittier Ward 6 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
