I'll pass on Mary Richards as "art," but I love the idea of seeing her on
Nicollet Mall, tossing her hat up in the air at the sheer joy of not being in
Rochester (or Fargo, or LA or Somalia) anymore. Mary's statue is just another
one of those "bonding things" that keep us in this special place year after
snowy year.
Yes, a Mary Richards statue is a bit of whimsy, even representing a slice of
history--those days before we were world famous as the home of the Mall of
America.
When it's finally in place, I'll walk by it and remember when I arrived here
from Fargo to live here permanently. Had I beret to toss, I probably would
have been shocked that it wasn't grabbed by a prairie wind and carried all
the way to the sugar beet factory.
Whimsy. Please, give me more.
