Which is exactly why the neighborhoods bordering Lyndale some 10 years
ago banded together to 'calm' the traffic on Lyndale. The County had
wanted to widen Lyndale to four real lanes between Minnehaha Parkway to
36th Street (every single tree in that stretch would have been
sacrificed), but the uproar stalled the project. A very ambitious
'calming' plan was produced by some very committed people (the plan still
resides in my little black notebook) - all the paperwork can probably
still be found in KFNA files. For all the work, the Hennepin County
highway engineers blocked all the efforts to 'calm' Lyndale. The issue
became one of the pivotals in the last commissioner race, since which
there has been nothing written for the local newspaper consumption.
Methinks the calming issue will arise again which I hope is sooner than
later.
