Dear all:

The results from my convention were not good for me. As a "longshot" it shouldn't be
a surprise. We had terrible turnout -- maybe 40% or 45% of delegate slots were
filled. There wasn't going to be any change when most delegates do not appear at the
convention.

On the first ballot Joan Campbell had 55% and I had 16%. Paul Zerby had either 26% or
29%. I withdrew before the second ballot. The math wasn't there. I wasn't going to
win, and Campbell was on her way to winning. Trying to block the endorsement I
thought would seem vindictive. I withdrew and was upfront with the delegates that I
was going to support Campbell.

I know, I know. Campbell has not been a friend of progressive causes, or at least not
a friend since the 1980s. And I feel bad for disappointing supporters. Paul Zerby
entered into the race late and was still undefined on the issues. Paul is a great man
and he shares the desire to change city council. I didn't think that Paul was ready
to be a city councilmemeber. Anyway, I had promised to abide by the endorsement and
support the endorsed candidate.

On the second ballot, Campbell won with 61% to 38% of the vote for Zerby.

Paul Zerby will go on to the primary as will Cam Gordon, of course. I wish that it
was me going on, but I'm sure that both Paul and Cam will take Joan to task on the
issues. Ward 2 is a race to watch.
