Mayor Sayles Belton to Begin 2001 Community Public Safety Meetings
Mayor, Police Chief, and reps from City and County Attorneys to
provide updates and respond to citizens' questions

March 18, 2001 (Minneapolis, MN)-Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton will
begin her third annual round of community public safety meetings Monday.
The first meeting, representing the Second Precinct, will be held at Edison
High School. A list of five meetings - one representing each precinct and
the Downtown Command - is included at the bottom of this release. The
meetings are designed to provide the community with public safety updates
for 2000, a review of CODEFOR reports, and opportunities to ask questions
and raise concerns.
"A strong and positive relationship between the Minneapolis Police
Department and the community it serves is essential for effective crime
prevention," said Mayor Sayles Belton. "These community meetings are an
opportunity for the Minneapolis Police Department to provide detailed
updates about its activities and to answer questions from citizens. Each
year, we gain valuable insight from citizen input, which in turn helps us
continually improve the quality of our public safety efforts."
The meetings will include a presentation by the Police Chief Robert Olson
and Deputy Chief Bill Jones detailing CODEFOR activities and crime numbers
by precinct and citywide. The Precinct Commander will also provide a
precinct-specific update. The Mayor, City Council members representing the
precinct and representatives from the City and County Attorney's offices
will also make presentations and be available to answer questions.

Minneapolis named as one of top 10 cities for families in nation
Child Magazine places Minneapolis-St. Paul third in April issue

March 18, 2001 (Minneapolis, MN)-Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton
today announced that Minneapolis was named as one of the top ten cities in
the nation to raise a family in the April, 2001 issue of Child magazine.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul area was ranked third.
"I am very pleased that Child magazine ranked Minneapolis as one of the best
places for families. We are a very family-friendly community with a booming
economy, great neighborhoods, strong support for our public schools, a
thriving arts community, and a park system that is world-renowned. We also
have strong public-private partnerships that promote school readiness, youth
development, and healthy families. Minneapolis is a great place to raise a
family and this recognition is well-deserved."
Child magazine surveyed over 100 families, looking at everything from health
care to housing, air quality and education. They praised Minneapolis for
the 52 miles of walking and biking paths known as the Grand Rounds Scenic
Byway. They also said, "...Minneapolis squeezes in more theater eats per
capita than any other city in the country besides the Big Apple. And adults
aren't the only ones filling in the rows. Families flock to the 35-year old
Children's Theatre Company (CTC), nationally renowned for its lavish, high
quality productions..."
Cities named, in order, include Denver, Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Newport News,
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Miami, Orlando, Madison WI, Anaheim, Rochester, NY,
Boston, and San Diego.
