For those of you who read this morning's
Star Tribune, I wanted to clear up an inaccurate statement about my position
on the airport.
The story said that I have advocated a new airport. Actually, two years ago
the board of ROAR and I developed a comprehensive strategy for reducing
pollution and increasing capacity.
It included moving some of the traffic from MSP to other locations,
including, potentially cargo to St. Cloud and some passenger traffic to
Rochester.
(FYI:The Mayor, who until a year ago was saying a Farmington site was too
far from downtown, has now changed her position to agree with our idea about
Rochester.)
One of the reasons we have advocated this strategy, instead of having all
the focus on a new airport, is that we believe residents need immediate
pollution relief and should not have to wait for the long time it will take
to site and build a new airport.
We have also called for the development of a comprehensive statewide
aviation polity that has people who know more about aviation than me
deciding how to solve this massive problem we are in. That may or may not
lead to a new airport.
I will be going into this is much more depth but I wanted people to know
right away that neither I, nor ROAR, have been
calling for a new airport.
