Community Outreach/Greening Organizer



The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) is the community participation organization for the Stevens Square- Loring Heights neighborhood, unique historic neighborhood just south of downtown Minneapolis. SSCO is currently seeking a qualified community outreach and greening organizer to work with residents on community greening efforts, planning community events, and other community organizing activities. While there are certain activities that the job requires, there is also room for new creative and energetic projects as the employee�s interest suggests.


Responsibilities:
Staff SSCO�s Outreach & Events Committee and Arts & Greening Committee, including arranging meeting space, help develop monthly agendas and mailings, etc. in conjunction with committee chairs and other SSCO staff

Work with community members, through the committees and community organizing techniques, to identify, prioritize and implement community greening and outreach projects;

Coordinate neighborhood volunteers to help maintain community greenspaces, including the 17th Street Overlook and Greenway, the Emily Peake Garden, and Stevens Square Park

Help coordinate gardening activities at the LaSalle Community Gardens

Organize various community events, including the Spring Clean Sweep and a Neighborhood Plant Sale, Fair in the Square, WinterLights, and the annual fundraiser

Miscellaneous office work, including helping to keep the database updated, working with other staff members on organizational priorities, and other duties as requested

Reports to SSCO Executive Director


Qualifications include:
Experience working or volunteering with a community-based organization. Community organizing experience preferred

Gardening expertise; knowledge of community gardening resources a plus

Event planning experience a plus

Good personal organizational skills, and a self-starter with ability to problem-solve

Ability to work with and to connect with people from diverse backgrounds

Knowledge of basic computer programs, including word processing and databases. Knowledge of website design is a plus

Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening/weekend hours

College degree


Full time, forty (40) hours per week, with compensated time available. Salary is $24.5-26K to start, plus benefits, including full health and dental coverage, and a 403(b) plan.
