Subject: [Mpls] Mayor announces push to cleanup downtown
The news release below details information about the Mayor's news conference
held 10:00 a.m. Monday morning to announce clean up activities downtown.
During the news conference, the Mayor emphasized this cleanup was an early
start on the City's planned upcoming citywide cleanup efforts in order to
get downtown in shape for the NCAA Final Four. Citywide cleanup efforts
will begin in earnest in April when the snow melt in neighborhoods is
sufficient to begin street sweeping.
***I'm glad that the neighborhoods are included now, but what about the
commercial corridors throughout the non-downtown portions of the city? In my
neighborhood, East Lake St. is full of post-winter garbage that is not inviting
to anyone. Downtown events may not generate traffic on Lake Street, that's
true, but folks who live and work in the area would appreciate it.
Public Works crews will Clean up entrance and exit ramps of the major
gateways to the city - I94, 35W, and 394
*** I'm glad this is getting done, but realistically shouldn't MNDot pay the
bill? Does the city have an arrangement to bill back this kind of labor to
MNDoT? If not, it should be pursued.
Question: Has the city put this kind of effort into trash removal every spring,
or is this a "first"? Although I've lived here for eight years, I don't recall
noticing such efforts in the past.
