I think the last thing we need is law enforcement making it more difficult
for taxis and limos to pick up customers and places like Rick's. Taxi
drivers have enough problems with police harassment and the city trying to
restrict their ability to do their jobs. Taxis provide a service, getting
people where they are going quickly and conveniently as well as discouraging
people from driving in to downtown where the cost of parking can sometimes
be as much as, if not more than, cab fare. Taxi drivers keep the city safer.
Without taxis servicing places like Rick's Cabaret, I guarantee that there
would be an increase in drunk driving as well as traffic in general. While
I don't support the industry that Rick's is a part of, Taxi drivers come
from many different countries, cultures and political ideologies, and can
hardly be called "john's cars." These are people working long 12 hour
shifts, struggling to pay their expenses who deserve to be treated with
respect. Finally, I've been harassed by the transit police and had my taxi
towed for stopping to close to the bus lane by Dream Girls (although my
customer was really going to get a gyro at the Sky Cafe next door.) Maybe
the next time some of you are downtown trying to hail a cab, think of these
things and how afraid we are of police harassment as the first few cabs pass
you by.
